Chicken News From the Green Acres Cottage

I'm new to the backyard chicken thing.  I've only had them for 3 months now. I can't believe how quick they grow and change and how dumb I really am about chickens.   I thought I would share a picture with you of Buttercup my Rhode Island Red.   I took this picture 3 months ago of her.    Look how cute she was only 3 months ago.  I was so excited to look forward to large brown eggs......
This is a picture of Buttercup I took today, only 3 months later.

Yep, she's a ROOSTER!   And the really sad part of it all, up to 2 days ago, I actually still thought she was a hen!  I guess I better read one of those Chickens for Dummies Books.  Yeah, go ahead and laugh at me, everyone else is!

My first two Ameraucanas were roos even though the feed store where I'd purchased them assured me they were hens. I started having a bad feeling when one of them started trying to crow at 4 weeks old! Pretty soon you will be a chicken expert!

Oh I have been there too! Just ask me about my 'hen' Big Bosy. I loved her! But she was a he and then it was time for Operation Rooster Relocation. It was hard, but now all of my girls are soooo happy.

I am not laughing because I thought they had to have a cockscomb on the top of their heads to be a rooster. Buttercup is a beauty though. Happy New Year to you. :D

Awww.... don't feel bad, Miss Ann... I've been "fooled" many times by chicks! *grin*
One thing is for sure, if you have a crower, you know there won't be any eggs from that "hen".... *hehe*
Buttercup is very beautful... er, should I say handsome?

How funny....I know nothing about chicken's except they lay eggs and I like "chicken" LOL.
I wouldn't have known the difference either. When you are done reading the chicken book for dummies pass it on...LOL
Have a sweet day and hugs, Elizabeth

Well if you are new to chooks/poultry there is nothing to be embarrassed about. All part of the learning process. Enjoy them, they are a wonderful addition to any farm or backyard. Thanks for posting.
