The Flower Bed

Isn't this the cutiest Flower Bed you ever saw? This bed which was a find in a garage sale is made out of heavy cast iron. It has been painted white with paint to protect it from rusting. The bottom of the bed has cast iron round poles all the way across to hold up the flower bed. Then a wood frame was made out of 2 x 6 water treated planks to fit the bed like a mattress around the edge. On the bottom of the wood frame is wire mesh to hold the dirt and let the water flow through. I have planted purple petunias as the pillow, when they start to grow they will puff up and look like a pillow. For the blanket on the bed, I have planted Two-Row Stonecrop (Sedum Spurium). They grow about 6" tall and blooms in the summer with clusters of pink flowers. When in bloom and when the petunias are full, it looks like a pillow and blanket! On the ground I have planted ground cover which blooms with white flowers in the summer. I have it cut out round so that it looks like a rug under the flower bed!

Oh Lordy, Ann... that is the cutest thing I have ever seen! I just stopped by to pay you a visit and to say thank you for leaving such sweet comments on my blog, and I saw this... It took my breath away!
You MUST get some chickens. You can build them a sweet little coop, and incorporate it into your outdoor decor. (they will also keep bugs out of your flowers, so tell Hubby he won't have to spray!) There are many small breeds that are not like "henhouse" chickens... very ornamental birds that are also very small and well behaved. If you would like to e-mail me(2frakers@bellsouth.net), I can send you some links to some of the small breeds, and also the most adorable chicken coop plans you have ever seen!
Sorry to be rambling on so long- please visit me again, soon!

After all this time I have never made the connection between the bed being a flower "bed". Very Cute!

That is so inventive! On the drive to town, there is a home that has a rusty old pick-up in their front yard and the bed of it is filled wit gorgeous annuals every year. They have a sign that says ' Truck garden '. I don't think I would want a big old truck in my yard, despite the cuteness of it but this bed--that I could do..
I think I will look for a toddler bed....

Hi Anne
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I now have potting shed envy! you have gorgeous gardens, you must be very proud (and rightly so)

Love everything you have shown but especially Charlie, he is wonderful. We love turtles and tortoises.

The garden bed is very cute.

Will pop by again soon

PS I am new to blogging how do you add other peoples blogs to yours as favourites?

I saw a flower bed almost exactly like this when I was in Port Huron, Michigan for business and if we weren't driving back it so fast I would've taken a picture. I love the corny-type of picture captions and a flower BED would have been great... but you have one, all of your own!! Too cute!!

I came over to your blog on a suggestion from Rose at the cottagerose blog. She said you have a tortoise. I have two red-eared sliders that I got when I was in 4th grade from a classmate when they hatched in his sock drawer!

And you should definitely get chickens... they're addicting!!!
